Pythagoras

Pythagoras stands proudly in a new home.

Sculptor William Donnan in a photo taken by James Morgan on moving day. Looming large, like a dinosaur in our midst, the sculpture is a hulking giant known as "Pythagoras." It stood in all of its splendor in front of the Wellness Center on Weaver St. since the original installation of Art on Weaver in 1997. In that year James Morgan, creator of the Public Gallery and Art on Weaver, put out a call for sculptors to participate in an open gallery along Weaver St. Sculptor William Donnan, who for a time created pieces for the North Carolina Zoo near his home in Asheboro, was one of the sculptors who answered the call. He donated the piece to the Public Gallery in 2001. Even before this, a permanent home was sought for the piece.

Pythagoras stands between the two oak trees on North Greensboro St.There was a space in the center of Carrboro crying out for a piece. There had been talk some years ago of purchasing the sculpture called "Change of State" by William Moore. This ended up being only talk. It was made from guns that had been bought back from the towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill in a program called "Buy Back the Hill" in 1994. Somehow that piece just didn't seem right for the location. The Art Committee met with James Morgan in the year 2000 to discuss the options. No decisions were made. Still the empty space cried to be filled.

The Move

Pythagoras attached to a crane. Moving Pythagoras. Pythagoras gets put into place. Pythagoras settles in.

The moving crew was Streets Superintendent David Poythress, William Donnan, Marion Lyde, (back row) Lawrence electric employee, Mike Ashby, Jerry Rhodes, and Rickey McKinney. Anchor points for the piece in its planned home were poured in a 3 hour procedure back in December. On January 30, 2002, the crane arrived and the work of moving the huge creature began. With the help of the Public Works Department and a few good men, 4 hours and much toil later, Pythagoras settled into a new home, filling the long vacant place and giving new life to the piece between the two towering oaks on North Greensboro St., across from the Century Center. The giant among giants appears perfectly happy in the new space it calls home. Appearing in the final photo are (front) David Poythress, William Donnan, Marion Lyde, (back) Lawrence Electric employee, Mike Ashby, Jerry Rhodes, and Rickey McKinney.
