Many businesses have called 118B East Main St. home over the years. In the past decade one could walk inside to the smell of incense burning when Nomadic Trading occupied the space, a new exhibit when an art gallery was here, or a great deal when a discount clothing store, and then a used clothing shop made this place their home.
And while there have been many lives and transformations to the space, one thing has remained unchanged: the wall.
With all of the comings and goings, the eastern wall has remained the same - unsanded, unpainted, allowed to remain in its original glory. The golden, grayish, greenish brown hues are fascinating, creating a backdrop for the store that gives it a character unlike all the others, a sense of staying power, and a sense of identity.
Jenny McMillan somehow knew all of this when she decided to open her new store, Nested, in this space. Part art gallery, part specialty shop, Jenny offers fine handcrafted items for the home and body.
A graduate of NC State with a degree in Industrial Design, McMillan knows a little something about design. A member of the Carrboro Art Committee, Jenny is herself an artist, creating large mixed media collages, which have graced the walls of Carrboro Town Hall and other spaces in the area.
From art and the best lighting to accent the work, to rugs designed to pull a room together, Nested was conceived to help folks with their interior design projects.
McMillan thinks it's time to bring a bit of sophistication to downtown Carrboro with a store that displays many out-of-the-ordinary items. Nested offers unique conversation pieces for the home and jewelry for the body. Clever, creative designs with a metropolitan flair are what this store is all about.
“Everything in the store is made in small quantities and has a very high quality, but the prices are reasonable,” says McMillan of her new endeavor. “I wanted to bring some the great designs you find in major metropolitan areas to our community. Many of the things in the store are contemporary designs that work well in traditional settings – those pieces that really make a room.”
Nested is also the latest entry in the ever-popular Carrboro/Chapel Hill Second Friday Art Walk, and Jenny plans to have fun with this event.
Nested offers a gift registry and full service shipping. Call 919-338-8023 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
