These days nearly all websites use Java scripts or Java applets to perform certain tasks. Java is simply a type of web programming that codes pages to do everything from making pictures change, fade, or move, to automatically changing background or text colors, to anything else a Java programmer can think up that's new and different or tried and true.

If you see a big gray or black empty box appear on a page, that's non-functioning Java. Many folks don't realize that in order to see these wonderful spectacles of web magic function, your browser needs to be Java enabled. This used to be a simple task, but since the Microsoft lawsuit it's become a bit more complicated. Microsoft is no longer allowed to package Java in with Internet Explorer. You will need to go to the Java™ website and download the plug in. This is a free plug in which will enable the Java function once you download and install it. In other words, those big grey and black boxes you've been seeing and wondering why in the heck the web designer stuck that there, will turn into pictures or graphics, usually moving around somehow or fading in and out. These special effects are the function of a Java script or Java applet.

If you have an older version of a IE or Netscape, the option may still be built into the browser. In Internet Explorer go to Tools, then Internet Options, then Advanced. Scroll down to Java VM and click on all 3 boxes so your browser will recognize and process Java commands. If you use Netscape, go to Edit, then preferences, then Advanced. Click the two Java boxes. If you don't see the option for Java, you can go to the Java™ website and get a free download. If you use an AOL browser, change to one of the above. AOL converts image files into .art files, compressing them so they look awful. You'll be amazed at the difference.

We use several Java applets in our website, most of them freeware from JavaScripts at Earthweb.
