![]() In the final analysis there is only 1 version that we recommend. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 is by far the best browser at this point in time. Anything less than that really doesn't cut it. Microsoft also offers many add-ons that make for a much more useful experience, like Active Desktop and NetMeeting. We find that pages download much more quickly with IE 5.0, and the interface is very user friendly. Above all, if you are with AOL, don't use their browser. It compresses images to the point of making them appear as fuzzy blurs. This is not a good thing. While they might load more quickly, what you see is so badly distorted, it doesn't make up for the time saved in loading. Go to the Internet Explorer homepage and download one of their free browsers. The latest product from Netscape is Netscape 4.6, which is being touted as the most wonderful creation since the beginning of the browser wars. We've tried this latest version, but it's still slow as molasses. The time it takes to pull up a page is enough to make you scream! It also has a tendency to lock up our computer so we're forced to reboot. Graphics still aren't as clear as with IE, and certain java applets aren't supported at this point in time, which means not everything shows up on the page the way it should. Our advice is to stick with IE. As we already stated, it doesn't cost anything to download these products. Click a banner at the top of the page. Go for it! The browser you use can make all the difference in the world when it comes to how the pages appear on your monitor. Related stories:
